This site started in 2005 to show the historic and my photographic journey of Massachusetts Mental Institutions.
These buildings were once a staple for treatment and an icon for hope. The buildings were built
and placed in a way that made each place different, but all gearing to the same message. It was
a place for new beginnings and hope. These buildings were once full of life, new ideas, and
promise for their patients until budget cuts and new treatment plans changed. Now most of the
buildings were left to be neglected and forgotten in the past. It's important to document the
builds and show the history of these architectural master pieces that once was full of people and
the care for the less fortunate. Most of the building are listed in the National Register of
Historic Places. The buildings are being destroyed for Condos, Golf Courses, Mini malls or
Open space. This part of history is slowly fading away from Massachusetts each and every day.
There is an effort to try to save some of these buildings but the future doesn't look to promising
for them. Most, if not all of the Hospitals have been bought from contractors and are now just a
memory. Thanks to presentation groups some of these hospitals may still have a chance to leave their
story behind. For the ones that don't, this site is dedicated to them and their story. |
