Gaebler-Childrens-Center

The population of children in Metropolitan State Hospital was increasing to dangerous levels. To separate the children from adults the state decided to build a center for its young patients. Located down the street from Metropolitan State Hospital they opened the Gaebler Children's Center on October 8, 1955. Named after the second superintendent of Metropolitan State Hospital. The property was equipped with a swimming pool, swings, basketball nets, tennis court, a hot top,a round about, and a sand box for the children to use. Gaebler consisted of two wings. One to the left and the other to the right. The psych wards were located on the upper floors of the complex while therapy and a cafe on the bottom. The children would also go over to Fernald State School across the street for other activities like arts and crafts. On January 31, 1992 after 37 years Gaebler closed.
