Metropolitan State Hospital
Too take pressure off other State Hospitals Metropolitan State was built in 1928.
Located in three different towns. Waltham, Belmont, and
Lexington. The site chosen was on Trapelo road in Waltham near the Fernald School.
It opened its doors in 1930. Not built in the Kirkbride Plan
like most of the other hospitals but instead it was built in a cottage style, With
a court yard in the middle of the patients complex for recreational
use making no need for fences. Dozens of tunnels linked each place to one another.
Just south east was the Gaebler Children's Center which
was later built in 1955 on the grounds. Mostly known as "Hospital of seven Teeth"
because a former patient was found with seven of a missing
patients teeth. It closed its doors in 1992 due to budget cuts and other methods
in mental health treatment.
