Belchertown State Hospital
With Fernald and Wrentham State Schools becoming over crowded. A new facility was to be built in western Massachusetts. The location they chose was on 876 acres of land in the small town called Belchertown. In 1922 the new state school opened its doors. Belchertown State School for the Feeble-Minded took in patients from Fernald State School. The campus consist of 10 main buildings built in a Colonial Revival style. Due to budget cuts and a change for mental health care, Belchertown State School closed its doors in 1994.
